Reference Resources

Students living in today’s world must process vast amounts of information. The school media center plays an important role in providing students with up-to-date- resources to meet the students’ information needs and by providing lessons in the effective use of these resources.

All information skills taught in the media center are integrated through the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, which provide a framework by clearly defining what all students should know and be able to do throughout their years of public education.

A goal of the school media center is to prepare students to be information literate. Information literacy is the ability to access, comprehend, use and evaluate information.

  •     Information skills taught in the media center are directly related to classroom assignments.
  •    Media center lessons are planned in collaboration by the classroom teacher, technology teacher, and the media specialist.
  •     Media center research activities involve a process of inquiry, problem-solving, collection, evaluation, and presentation.
  •     Classes visit the media center every six days, but additional time in the media center will be scheduled as needed.

The Media Center and “No Child Left Behind”

The “No Child Left Behind” education agenda is designed to improve student achievement as it is measured on standardized tests. Studies have shown that an effective library media program has a positive impact on student performance.
